I haven't seen the episode yet, so I am replying solely in response to your subject line: I miss that too!

Eventually I will see the episode, and then maybe I'll be able to say something about your actual post. :)

I really wanted to come online and see what you had written about this episode. :) But it's amazing- I used to come online Saturday/Sunday and see heaps of people posting and analyzing the episodes and this weekend, I didn't see a single DW post. Sad!

This weekend was just so busy for me (grading, ugh) that I haven't had a chance to catch up with Doctor Who - which is of course higher on my priority list, but try telling that to my students. Hmph.

But I miss the conversations! I feel like fandom has moved to Tumblr, but I'm not sure the conversation went with it...

(using my Ever After icon in honor of Dougray Scott, who was great)

Emily, it was soooo good! I love your post, because I was a tiny bit annoyed by the whole TARDIS thing, even though it was funny - why is she behaving that way with Clara, when she didn't with any previous (New Who) companions? But your take on it makes sense: the Doctor's still trying to figure her out.

Have we had any hand-holding between Clara and Eleven yet? In an episode where holding hands - having a hand to hold - is flagged as so important, it's telling that the Doctor isn't holding Clara's hand when she thinks he is. In retrospect, I love that - at first it just seems like a way to amp up the creepiness, but it's actually a bit of character detail, too. ("Every monster needs a hand to hold ( ... )

I can see a parallel between the Doctor's distaste of Jack in S3 and the TARDIS now for Clara- it's interesting to see the TARDIS stepping in now, more protective than before. Luckily, Clara has yet to cling to the side of the TARDIS as she hurtles through the space/time vortex, so that's something!

Your hand-holding question intrigues me. I'm really not sure! When I rewatch, I'm going to have to look out for it, because it's been such a hallmark for me of New Who so far, starting back with Nine.

I totally didn't notice the umbrella again! It kind of ties in with the Clara as magical nanny = Mary Poppins idea, I suppose. I wonder if it's a nice nod, or a Thing or what?

I also didn't really think hard enough about the Doctor equating himself with a monster. OH DOCTOR. I love my self-loathing Eleven something fierce, but I hope he gets a good hug soon.

I seem to remember that there was hand-holding between Eleven and Victorian!Clara - wasn't there a line about how it was *his* job to do the hand-holding, when Clara grabs his hand and leads him somewhere? But I can't remember if we've seen it between Eleven and this Clara.

The umbrella was also red, which is Clara's signature color, so I have to imagine that at least *that* was intentional, even if the umbrella itself isn't symbolic beyond the "magical nanny" idea.

I just..."lonely monster," not "Lonely God." (Feelings explosion.) I love that shift. But yes, I hope he gets a hug, too - one that he knows what to do with, anyway. (He was *so* confused when Clara hugged him in "Cold War." Which makes sense, if he still can't trust that she's real...)
