it's a conspiracy of cartographers

Wow, I have been startlingly absent from LJ of late, haven't I? Work has been pretty busy of late, but there has been time for some outings in the last week.

- On Monday night, I went to see the Shakespeare Theatre's production of Much Ado About Nothing, which was pretty much exactly what I predicted it would be- pretty standard, unexciting, and ( Read more... )

RSC did MAAN set in Cuba 5 or 6 years ago. Not that they did anything with the setting either, but at least it had Tamsin Greig in it. And yeah, no, you can't expect anything better of STC. The only thing they're good at is showing how big their budget is.

(OMG, please tell me if there is any drama or rumblings concerning the recent job posting from your theatre. I am dying of curiosity, but don't feel like emailing your rentals person and hoping he'll gossip at me.)

You are more in the know than I am! I didn't know there were any openings- I spend all my time stuck in the box office, so the scuttlebutt can be hard to come by!

Every now and then, STC does a show that I really enjoy. Of course, the times that that show was fully produced in DC are rare, but still- sometimes!

I figured the interns would be talking about it, I don't know how much you get to interact with them. When I worked there as overhire, they all tended to chat at the box office from time to time.

I think the last show I saw at STC that I really liked was Lear, but that was mostly because I love Lear, and the moor scene was exactly how I would have staged it. So.

I had not! I did see an article in the Huffington Post yesterday here (beware the comments section, it's pretty foul) that reported that they were returning to the Oatcake/Seacoal names for the rest of the run.

What strikes me is how LAZY the director was. He just recycled an idea and then SO CLEARLY didn't actually think it through in order to see how problematic his choices would be. The production is the product of a lot of white dudes, and it shows- painfully. The theatre is taking some action to backpedal a heap of foolish decisions, but they're not going to change the casting or the setting. I really wish I were still there this year, because I bet there have been a LOT of interesting conversations going on there...
