I've never really thought about the "community" part of "community theater." Are some towns and places intentionally seeking space for theater and art? Do they feel themselves answering a need or responsibility?

The Shea Theater in Turners Falls is such a place. Around 15 years ago, a group of people convinced the town to buy the old theater building and they renovated it and it now serves as home for three theater companies, all producing community theater.
