Left-Leaning Politics and Religion

Dec 06, 2007 16:49

Today, I read an interesting post on left-leaning politics and regligion at the Public Humanist blog. Much is made of Mitt Romney's Mormanism and how it might affect his candidacy. There are some scurrilous rumors about Barack Obama's religious ties, although he is a member of a UCC church. I was interested in the fact that John Kerry is a member of a Paulist Catholic Church.

In my reply to the Public Humanist post, I mentioned my longtime fascination with William Jennings Bryan as a crossroads figure in religion and politics. I did a story for the Valley Advocate in early 2004 about the Rev. Tom Gough of the Old First Church in Springfield, which I understand is closing at the end of this month. The article, called "Open, Affirming and On-Bible" is sadly nowhere to be found in the Advocate's new archive system. But in it, I talked a little about liberal theology, which is an interest of mine as well.

Update 12/7: Some interesting commentary at BMG about Mitt and his speech about religion and politics. I tend to feel that Mitt is carefully not articulating a call for an America of broad pluralism with regards to religion, but some sort of variation of the "First Commandment Alliance."
