I think I may love you for "all the subtlety of a rhinoceros in a string bikini."

Eh, I'm terrible at chess. It's nothing to do with general intelligence. I don't see the whole board. Otherwise, I've only learned how to write better plot twists by working really hard at it and thinking critically about how other people write plot twists in various media.

And honestly? I'd kill to come up with your metaphors. Vala being a cure for boredom the way a hurricane was a solution to the doldrums remains one of my favorite lines ever.

It's not what you do, it's how you get there.

A story where you can spot the ending miles away still has to earn that payoff. To use an example from a different field, think about music. We're singing a Bach piece in my choir. You can basically predict the last chord from the beginning--Baroque music is like that. But the stuff Bach does along the way is MIND-BLOWINGLY AWESOME. Nobody comes to the concert to just hear the resolution. They want to hear the whole piece.

I like a 'cool twist' as much as the next girl, but I also like the more comfy kind of story where I can just settle in for a good read, you know? I think I've described your writing before as like a big cozy blanket you wrap yourself up in. Please don't feel bad about not having 'cool twists'! You don't need them!

I have all the subtlety of a rhinoceros in a string bikini.

Now that's a horrifying visual.

And just because you know how things are going to turn out doesn't mean the audience will. Just always try to keep that in mind and you'll do fine.

I didn't figure out the question either, if it makes you feel better. Though I did guess pretty quickly that the way he'd get out of his death would involve the shape-shifting robot. You know what? It didn't matter that I knew how he'd survive ten minutes into the show. It was still a fun ride seeing it all play out. And the same thing will go for your stories. :)
