Sam vs Dean? Thoughts? Commentary? Ideas?

This is not me playing devils advocate…just putting it out there.

So.  I’m always pretty easy when it comes to SPN. I just am.  I don’t get to upset, I forgive plot holes, I ignore things that irritate me and I love Show for Show’s sake. But I sometimes wonder why some folks  get upset because they think that Dean is getting the raw end of the ( Read more... )

Well, being a Deangirl myself, I can see where some folks are coming from. And that place is where every show is about Dean being epically heroic, funny and awesome and every other character is merely there to challenge, support or comfort him. I like that show a lot. It's what most of my fics are based on. Hahaha. Unfortunately, that show is not Supernatural ( ... )

This really made me laugh. DEAN IS A SAMGIRL. I think the writers do a pretty good job too. I think too that some of the reason some of us are so Samgirl or Deangirl is because we are so passionate about Show and these men.

That is a good thing.

Yes. But it would be so much more enjoyable if I could be equally passionate about both of them! I try... but to no avail. Sorry Sammy!

DEAN IS A SAMGIRL
So much yes to this.

You know me, Debs. I'm a Dean!girl all the way, but I can't picture Show without both boyz being integral to the story. I've never felt like one took more center stage. Sure, there are stories about Dean that I felt weren't covered in enough detail, especially his time in hell, but I don't think they didn't do it because they wanted to focus more on Sam.

But it would be so much more enjoyable if I could be equally passionate about both of them! I try... but to no avail. Sorry Sammy!

I don't know if I'd say "more enjoyable" but I do have a lot more invested in Dean than Sam. I do love Sam, but I think I really love him only because Dean loves him. Sorry Sammy. *ruffles his ever growing hair*

Interesting thought! That's definitely one way to look at it.

You know me - I'm a diehard Dean girl, and I don't see any of it as being "all about Sam." What bugged me was that Show took away most of Dean's opportunities to be a big stinkin' hero, and turned him into a doormat. It might have made sense from their storytelling POV, but it's sure been depressing to watch! And to be fair, watching Sam turn into an arrogant asshat was pretty depressing too. I want our boys to show their heroic side - as equals. We can haz that plz?

I see what you mean about the boys not always having the opportunity to show their heroism. But I just feel like they are so intrinsically heroic that I never think of them as a doormats.

Still, strong capable boys? Kicking ass and taking names. Perfect.

First of all, John girl here too! I didn't love John when he was on the show, actually, but after reading lots of fan fic (some positive and some negative) it made me love him, and of course, JDM.

In regards to what you say: 100% agree. Also, I think both characters are complex and have been fully explored, and I think Dean's character has always been the more prominent character in the series, even when the storyline is focusing on Sam.

Haha, Dean is a Samgirl! So true. What I miss about the show most is the lighter-hearted, more fun episodes. Dean is a prankster and can be very funny, and the weight of all that's happened has really beaten him down, and that's what I miss, but otherwise, I think the show is pretty balanced between them, with Dean always being the cooler or more heroic of the two.

I loved John from the beginning. I have to say that he he has pissed me off occasionally too, but in terms of a great character? He is AWESOME.

I miss the light hearted eps too. I don't mind some angst but both Jared and Jensen are quite the comedians so when they are able to show that side it is great. Plus, I love to laugh!

I totally agree that Dean is a Sam!girl...I've thought that all along! :)I think we see a lot from his perspective and that you are spot on when you say that he sees himself as revolving around Sam and that does come across. I consider myself completely bi-bro (which I am told makes me a boy...go figure...) Sometimes I think maybe whichever bro people prefer just comes down to whoever they can relate to better personality-wise and even birth-order-wise, which I think is credit to J&J for playing brothers so believably. I think that I maybe relate a little better to Sam, but I love Dean to bits (and you know, maybe Sammy is a Dean!girl ( ... )

I like your thoughts on Bi bro...maybe that is where I am too. It's only when pushed into it that I think I identify with Sam and maybe some of that I am envious of Sam. How cool would it be to have a big brother like Dean?

(I'm the big sister, sometimes I wouldn't mind handing over those reins to someone else)

I don't think Dean is all about Sam, maybe that was an argument for the first 3/4 seasons but not anymore, nor do I think that the show is all about Sam with Dean in the role of supporter. In fact, I'm pretty happy with how much the show explores Dean and all his relationships, with Sam, of course, because he is his brother and they love and care for each other a great deal. With Bobby, and Cas, and still with John even if he's been absent from the show for so long. But also with Lisa and Ben, Ellen, Jo, etc. If people can't see all those relationships and the importance they had/have in Dean's life... well. I really don't know how to show them ( ... )

I think that when people lament a Dean storyline, and it's their righ to lament it even if I don't completely agree with them, they do not refer to what you say above, but to the fact that Dean has not had a supernatural storyline in the last season - season 6.

I think that people have the right to lament too! We are so invested in these boys! All of those strong feelings just drive that point home.

I'm not sure that Dean didn't have a storyline in 6- there was the whole Ben and Lisa thing. That was huge for Dean. Just like his ultimate choice to let them go. Dean had a whole life outside of Sam and hunting, again, huge. I think that sometimes we feel like he doesn't have a storyline because there is never any satisfaction for Dean. His dream of a family? Crushed.

He did get his brother back though and that was great.

But I can see a bit why folks feel that way. Thanks for the input!
