the pit of voles

Dear FF.net readers:

Why do you favorite stories without ever bothering to leave feedback? Or should I just accept you marking a story as a favorite as feedback in itself and be happy to get that?

Yours,
me

I guess there's not much else you can do, huh?

I figure it's because someone's got through reading the story but doesn't have time to leave feedback.

I also loathe the fanfiction dot net review interface. Some days the windows pop up all wonky when I'm not properly logged in and then it pulls itself off of the story when I do get logged in whereas log-in to favourite is less likely to do that.

I really try to avoid that website. It's not a good reading interface, it's not a good searching interface. Sadly, it's still one of the few spots to find stories for certain fandoms.

Heh. I'm far less charitable. I generally just figure it's laziness. :P (Well, or not knowing what to say and opting for saying nothing rather than "I liked this.")

Well, sometimes I'm the lazy person - when I finish reading a story and it's nearly 11 and I try to leave a review and the site bounces me back to the log-in screen. . . .

I say to hell with it and go to bed. LJ and AO3 are tonnes better-engineered for leaving feedback in my mind but that's probably exacerbated because I only go to fanfiction dot net once in a blue moon so I never remember to log in first.

That's not lazy! That's like the opposite of lazy.

And I totally agree with you regarding LJ and AO3. (I love the kudos button! It's perfect for all the times you want to leave feedback but are too lazy (or tired) to do it. :P)

Weeeell, all I know is that I have always considered myself terrible at leaving feedback, and therefore favoriting something without saying anything would be ultimately preferable for both sides than the author having to read whatever I wrote. I've never learned how to put into words why I like what I like, probably because I tend to like weird, bordering-on-unacceptable things so much (see: Roswell and BSG OTPs) and I doubt fic authors want to read feedback that consists only of "I loved this" / "This was so good!" / some variation thereof, especially if I'm doing it for multiple stories by the same author. (And I know you have a lot.)

Or it could be because of laziness. But this is why I do it, lol.

Hah! Yes! One of the main reasons for me not leaving feedback is being all tongue tied as to what I want to say.

ETA: But from an author's POV, I never get tired of reading "I liked this." ;)

I figure if there's no comment, then it's the same as a 'like'/kudos.

The one that gets me is the Story Alert on the one-shot/finished story...
