One of Us
Lifting his camera to snap off a quick shot, Jimmy grinned to himself. No way he'd let that moment be lost forever, Clark feeding Lois a bite of dumpling with a pair of chopsticks, her eyes rolling as he grinned. It'd be added to the hundreds Jimmy had already collected for them, photos mostly taken when the pair wasn't looking, when they were working, chatting, and sometimes even sneaking in a quick kiss when they thought no one would notice.
Jimmy always noticed. He couldn't help it if the sight of his friends together made his chest ache, the tiniest touch of old yearning rising up every time, to be quickly overwhelmed by an appreciation he'd acquired over the years. He was happy for them. They made him happy, just by being happy together, by being what they needed for each other openly.
“Jimmy, will you put that away and come eat, already?” Lois called across the conference room to him, rolling her eyes at him this time.
Caught, as usual, he set his camera on the table and got up to go join them in rummaging through the cartons of take-out that Clark had retrieved to get them through the long evening as they tried to meet the last deadline. “All right, all right,” he relented. “Do we have any spring rolls?”
Clark handed him the carton across the table, raising an eyebrow at him from behind those thick glasses. “You know, it wouldn't hurt you to get in some of those photos with us,” he suggested, the very thought of it making Jimmy blush. Jim was the photographer, for God's sake.
“Mmm, maybe someday,” he said, finally biting into a spring roll.
But when a click sounded from the other end of the table, Jimmy froze, a slight breeze moving over him. “D'you just-?” he asked, mouth full, wide eyes turned to Clark.
Lois burst into laughter, leaning over to wrap an arm around Jimmy's shoulders and squeeze him tight, then drop a quick kiss on his heated cheek and tug playfully at his bowtie, and he knew he'd been had.
“Give it up, Jim,” Clark said, giving him that cocksure half-smile that he usually reserved for charity appearances in the red and blue. “You're one of us.”
And with that, that tiny twinge of jealousy that he occasionally carried around evaporated, the truth more than enough to wipe it out entirely and leave him smiling. Because even if no one else knew, Clark and Lois had been more than just his friends for a long time now, they'd been his partners, and in the end, they all made each other happy.
