I'm not sure if this is what you were going for, but it's what came out. :p

The voice in Babs' ear crackled with a momentary burst of static as wind blew across the rooftop where Dinah sat taking a breather after putting a stop to a street gang beat-out. "--swear, you'd think they'd get the pic-- after everything this city-- in the last few years."
"It's frustrating, I know," Babs replied, changing audio channels and switching her central screen to a video feed that was close to her partner's current location. "The two on the corner with the red bandannas, part of the gang?"
There was a slight pause as Dinah sought out the two from her perch. "Probably. Right colors, but they weren't there." Another pause, and Babs could swear there was a dark smirk on her friend's face when she went on, "I didn't exactly leave any of them free, much less conscious."
Giving a low chuckle at that, Babs shook her head, keying in the descriptions of possible accomplices for the police that were already on their way. "Hog tied and out cold. I

In fact, there hasn't been true happiness in this house since Master Richard was young, Robin and a Titan, the light in Master Bruce's life, and his as well.
Alfred pauses in the middle of drying a dish, the ghostly echo of long-ago laughter suddenly ringing in his ears, as clear as if it had been yesterday. So many years have passed since those happier times. If only he could have prevented them from ending, or found a way to make the intervening years as good for his charges. If only.
Yeah... I was really bitten *hard* by the angst bug today. *shuffles feet* But they *have* suffered so much. I think, of all of them, Alfred's probably suffered the most, having to stand by and watch it all happen.
Thanks, hon! :D I was really surprised when that bit me. :p
As for your ficlet, I must have really been bitten by the angst bug today. Go figure.

Sitting with her back to the window and ignoring the warm afternoon sunlight pouring in behind her, Diana cradled nearly-lifeless fingers in her palm, stroking them absently with her thumb. She couldn't take her eyes off the man in the hospital bed, looking so much smaller than she knew him to be as he slept. Only the constant working of the IV machine and the slow, shallow breaths he took gave her any sense that time was passing as she waited for him to wake.
He shouldn't have been here. It shouldn't have happened. She should have kept him safe during the battle, kept him out of harm's way when things got intense. But she hadn't, the smoke too think to be seen through without special vision, the melee to chaotic to cut through in time. And Steve had fallen

You've really spun a wonderful story here. Diana and Steve's love shines through like the sunlight at the end.
Poor Diana would beat herself up at Steve's falling in battle. You captured both their personalities very well, her guilt and worry and his worry that she might not be safe.

Poor Alfred.
The entire Bat-Clan!
They've sure suffered a lot over the years.
