Hey, have you heard that they're remaking that movie? I don't know if they're going live action or just making another cartoon, but either way, I AM WARY. WARY!
It surprised me that so many people said that, because she seems to be pretty good at accents, but I've seen at least three people say she was horrible. Hmm.
My Minnesota friends actually sound like that. Well, like a tamed down version of that at least. I think over the years accents everywhere in the country have gotten less pronounced, so since it's from a while back (I don't remember how long ago it was set) maybe it's more accurate? But yeah, my friends are all from northern Minnesota, because I was at school in northern Wisconsin for a year, and one of their favorite things to do on long trips was point out words where each others accents were really pronounced :)
It's set in 89. I saw a preview for it and my first thought upon seeing the year and MINNESOTA was, "Wow, did they make a movie about Jacob Wetterling?" I'd never heard of this case at all. Of course, I would've been 11, so.
But yeah, it annoys me because it just seems like most movies set in MN use a really hyperbolic accent and it just seems like they're mocking it. And I hate people thinking I sound like that, because it sounds STUPID.
I understand. I think everyone thinks their own accent sounds stupid. I have very little accent, but I *hate* pronounced New Jersey accents. I think they sound moronic. I hate hearing them mocked in movies because for the longest time I though, no one sounds like that.
Of course, after I left the state for a while, I noticed not only do a lot of people sound like (a slightly less exaggerated version of) that, but I do too sometimes. When I hear myself saying a word in a "Jersey way" it frustrates me to no end.
But just like you're saying, it's always more pronounced in a movie than 95% of the state speaks, so even if you have a slight accent, it really sounds nothing like what someone would expect based just off a movie and I understand not wanting people to think you talk like that.
But if it's any consolation, I don't think it (the Minnesota accent) sounds bad. And I don't think the intention in most dramatic roles is to mock it, at least it doesn't seem that way to me with North Country. I think it's just what tends to happen
( ... )
Aww! Piggies! They are so cute. I think your "accent" is cute, too. It's definitely nothing like Charlize's in the previews, so no worries. The reality is you don't have a strong accent but compared to Jersey me I probably pick up on it because some parts differ from my own pronunciation, i.e. Wutter vs Wahter. :)
Apparently, everything is cute to me today, except for the millipedes from work because EWW.
I maintain that the wutter/watter thing is YOUR accent and not mine. *g* Then there's any/ahnt, and there are definitely some differences in word choice, too, like pop/soda. But I don't think I've ever ONCE in my life said, "Yah, sure, you betcha."
We've got a new crisis client in the basement and for now, female staff pretty much aren't working with him, so NO MORE MILLIPEDES FOR ME.
I was just thinking about how fun Montreal was. I'm going to make a post after work and remind myself of all the stuff I forgot to post about before. Like the fire alarm going off! And those sesame seed candies I became addicted to.

No, I think that's highly unlikely. I'll bet you a pop/soda and sub/hoagie that you never do.

The completely random fire alarm where only about 5 of us actually bothered to evacuate the building.

Hee! Did you remember to stock up on those before you left? I wonder if you can order them online somewhere. You were to sesame seed candies as John was to those ice cream sandwiches. I also had some Pringle issues which I'm still dealing with.

How 'bout a Hoogie? :P
And, and! The Keg and our mad people skillz. Want some nachos? The little cafe that we kept walking by and wanting to eat in, that was really a disappointment when we finally went inside. Our horrible maid service! My red hoodie that doubled as a seat cushion!

Have I mentioned that I hate live action movies where animals talk? Because I do, and I STILL refuse to see Babe for that reason.

Also? I didn't think Charlize's accent was too bad. Hum.

The whole thing is still kind of surreal to me.

I can't believe it was two months ago already.
