This is really good...heart-breaking, but good. You kind of captured the essence of the waiting perfectly.

Really good and really sad. It is only going to get sadder I know, but I like a good cry with my fic sometimes. Only one nitpick, and it is a language thing: Dr. Lopez didn't imply that doctors couldn't fix everything, he said it - albeit in different words. Also, given his age and education, he is more likely to have said, 'As I said' than the more youthful and colloquial 'like', or even started it with "Unfortunately...". That small thing aside, I enjoyed the story and am looking forward to more.
