Chapter 4: In which past seems to get closer to present…
It took ten more minutes to Aiba to reach the car. But this ten minutes meant a lifetime’s torture to Sho. No matter what he did, he could only think about what was happening at the apartment between Aiba and Jun. Kissing, hugging, groping… and these were only his most innocent ideas…
“Gomen, Sho-kun… I didn’t mean to make you wait this much just…” Aiba started when he got in the car.
“Whatever…” Sho cut in and drove off.
Aiba went silent at that instant and looked at Sho with puppy eyes. It was obvious that the older man was angry; he held the wheel so strong that his knuckles turned white and Aiba was worried that one of them will break at the end.
But as they got more and more far from the apartment (and Jun) the angry wrinkle next to Sho’s mouth, disappeared and he wasn’t try to kill whoever was driving in front of them in the morning jam with his eyes anymore.
“So… you and Matsumoto Jun are… together?” Sho asked suddenly and he managed to grit his teeth not to loud when he mentioned the model.
“Me and Jun-pon… what?” Aiba squealed when he understand what Sho was hinting. “No! Nonono!” he shook his head furious, then started laughing. “He is just my flatmate…”
‘Your flatmate who incidentally happened to have a huge crush on you…’ Sho thought but loud he only said:
“I didn’t seem to me that you’re only flatmates…” Sho tried but failed hard to hiding jealousy from his voice.
“But that’s the truth! MatsuJun is just my flatmate… Just, you know… he is a bit… fond of skinship?...” Aiba said hesitantly as he wasn’t believe his own words as well.
“Yeah, sure…” Sho grouched.
Aiba thought it will be better if he keeps his mouth shut till they arrive. After all, it was Sho who does the favor to him and accompanies him to the hospital. Suddenly he smiled; he didn’t know why but it calmed him down…
Sho tried to be patient, he really was, but turned to be more and more difficult with each passing minute. Aiba was inside more than two hours! The doctor, Yashiki sensei told him to wait there till Aiba is finished and didn’t let him in. Sho didn’t know why Aiba has to come back to the hospital but what kind of check up last more than two hours?
Sho stood up from the uncomfortable plastic chair and paced back and forth; but soon one of the nurses scolded him for this, saying it bothers the other patients. The man sighed frustrated and thought about drinking a coffee in the cafeteria to calm his nerves down but then the door opened.
“Rest a bit, Aiba-kun, then you can go home” Yashiki sensei said and stepped out.
“Sensei!” Sho approached him. “Can you tell me what’s wrong with Aiba-chan?” he asked hopefully.
“Your not a familymember, right?” the doctor asked looking at Sho.
“Ehm… no, actually I’m not but…” Sho started to explain.
“Then I’m really sorry but can’t tell you anything. Unless Aiba-kun let me…” he added when he saw Sho’s disappointed face. “Anyway, take him home now and put him in bed. He will be weak and sleepy from the treatment for hours…”
“Wakarimashita” Sho nodded obediently.
He entered the room where Aiba was about to get up. But as he put his feet on the floor he lost his balance and almost fell but Sho was able to catch him in time.
“Aiba-chan, daijoubu?” he asked concerned.
Aiba blushed but didn’t do anything to pull away from Sho’s chest. It was oddly familiar and calming, being in Sho’s arms…
“Hai, daijoubu…” he said weakly and smiled softly.
“All right. Then let’s go home. The doctor said you have to rest”
“He always says that…” Aiba laughed a bit.
“However, how often do you have to come here?” Sho asked when they already sat in the car.
“Once in every two months…” Aiba said half sleeping.
“But why?” Sho asked again.
“They say for my condition not to be worst…”
“Your condition?... But you didn’t seem to be ill till now” Sho said confused.
When he didn’t get a respond he looked at Aiba who was sleeping soundly on the passenger seat. Sho smiled; he looked cute sleeping…
“Come on, Aiba-chan, we’re almost there…”
When Aiba fell asleep Sho decided to take him to his apartment because that was closer (and not because he didn’t want to Jun take care of Aiba, he tried to assure himself)
When he finally reached the bedroom with the half-conscious Aiba on his back, he had to realize that someone put a few extra meters in the way between his front door and bed… He cautiously put Aiba in bed and pulled the sheets over his shoulder. But when he stood up to leave, the younger grabbed his wrist.
“Can you stay with me?... Please…” he asked weak, half closed eyes.
Even he was that tall, he looked very small as he laid there in Sho’s bed.
“I feel better when you’re here with me… With you… I feel secure…” he added half conscious.
“Okay, I’ll stay…” Sho smiled at him softly and laid next to Aiba, immediately put his arm around his waist to pull him closer. Aiba sighed contently and melted into the embrace. “I would do anything to know what happened to you…” Sho murmured into the younger one’s hair when he thought he fell asleep again.
“They say… I had an accident… back then…” Aiba mumbled in his sleep.
Sho immediately sat up. A thousand questions popped into his mind but when he looked at Aiba, he saw that he was sleeping. Sho sighed and laid back and held Aiba in his arms again.
“Well… at least one more piece find its place in this crazy jigsaw puzzle…” he whispered to the silent room.
He wondered about these new questions for a bit then Aiba’s soft breathing sound lulled him to sleep too…
When he woke up, it was raining outside and the bed was empty next to him. He panicked over it and jumped out of the bed to run to the living room.
“Oh… you’re here…” he sighed relieved.
Aiba looked out the window though the water running down on the glass made only blurry visions from the sight.
“You know… I hate when the weather is like this…” Aiba started without turning his gaze from the window. “It’s like… it wants me to remember something… something that I can’t recall no matter how hard I try… and this…” Aiba clenched his hand into fist bitterly.
Sho stepped to him without thinking and pulled him in his arms. Aiba buried his face in the crook of his neck and hold onto him desperately.
‘Maybe… because it was raining like this that day too…’ Sho thought while he tried to calm Aiba down.
Sho heard small, knocking sound from his window. He looked there confused; it was raining hard outside… But the sound didn’t stop so he went there and opened the window…
“Masaki?” he asked surprised when he noticed the smaller boy drenching in the rain.
“Hi, Sho-chan!” he smiled up at him, thought that smile didn’t reach his eyes.
“What are you doing out there? Come in! You’ll catch cold!” Sho said worried.
Aiba looked toward his house hesitantly.
“I can’t… kaa-chan will looking for me soon… But I have to tell you something, Sho-chan…”
“Okay, okay, I’ll go down. Just… just wait for me!” Sho said and run out.
“So… what do you want to talk about?” Sho asked as he pulled the younger under his umbrella.
“Well… tou-chan got a new job… so we’re moving…” Aiba said after a long pause and lowered his head.
Sho didn’t know what to say or do. Aiba… is moving…?
“Wh.. when?”
“Today… right now…” Aiba answered guilty.
“But… but…” Sho stuttered.
“Gomen, Sho-chan… but I couldn’t tell you before… I… I don’t want to leave you… But… I’ll write to you as soon as we moved in… Yakusoku!” Aiba promised.
Sho still didn’t know what to say so he just nodded.
“Jaa… I have to go now… Ja ne, Sho-chan!” Aiba raised a bit so he could kiss Sho on the lips then run off.
Sho didn’t remember when was the last time he felt himself distressed like now. He collapsed on his couch and leant his head back.
After he dropped off Aiba at his apartment he drove through the city for hours hoping it will help him to sort out his thoughts but it didn’t work. The result was the same as always: when Aiba answer one of his questions that answer leads only to ten new questions. This started to be too much to him… He needs… he needs…
“That’s it!” he cried out and jumped up.
He quickly took his mobile and dialed.
“Kaa-san!” he said when the other party picked up.
“Sho! What a nice surprise! How are you?” his mom asked happily.
“I’m fine… or not, but that’s not important now… I want to ask you something…”
“Go ahead! I didn’t think you need to ask permission for it…” the woman joked. “So, what’s it?”
“Actually, it’s quite difficult… Can I go home this weekend to talk?” Sho asked.
“Of course! Your dad will take your sister and brother to a trip so it will be just the two of us. We can talk about anything you want…”
“Arigatou, kaa-san!” Sho smiled relieved.
