Waking up went something like this. First Kon just basked in the overwhelming feeling of happy. Gradually, he became aware of niggling discomforts. His empty stomach was one, as was the thought that a good cup of coffee would really hit the spot about now. But these were easily ignored, and Kon kept his eyes resolutely shut

Rin had only herself to blame. Falling asleep outside was one thing, but falling asleep outside in a place where she knew there was a tentacle monster with thwarted designs to play wig roaming about? Yeah.

Pulling at Kal had so far only resulted in hair loss and a very painful scalp, so Rin enlisted help.

"Haru, get him off."

"Ah," said Haru, sizing up the situation. "Kal."

Haru patted the tentacle monster on the head. "I don't think Rin wants you playing on her head, Kal."

"Like hell I don't! Try pulling!"

"He is just a child," Haru said mildly. "Let's go to the Underwear Tree."

Really, Rin should have thought of that herself.

"Thanks," she said grudgingly, watching as Kal sat in Haru's lap, happily munching on a particularly fruity pair of underpants.

"Kal's not so bad once you get to know him," Haru said. "Sharing a cabin with him ... well, it was even fun."

Kal evidently shared this sentiment, as he turned around to give Haru a full-tentacle hug.

The results were surprising.
