Content Background Color Issue

This is baffling me. I can't seem to get this issue to resolve and I'm positive I'm missing something obvious but can't seem to see it.

Over at workshop_rees you can see my design I'm working with. I would like the #content to have an overall background of white but no matter what I do the content attribute in the CSS isn't working. I have the maincontent and

The problem is that both #maincontent and #sidebar float and thus neither shows up as inside of #content, making it an empty and short div.

Hmmm... okay. That worked. Odd because before that float I couldn't get the maincontent on the left side.
