As far as I'm aware none of the possible solutions work without a theme layer, so you would need a paid account.

There is one way to circumvent this problem for a free/plus account: you could display the summary in the sidebar, which should always contain links to all entries on the page, no matter if they have a subject line or not. I'm not sure if you want to go that route with the set-up of your current layout, though.
