Looks like you already got some good answers to your question in s2flexisquares. It's possible in FS to remove comment indenting through CSS, but as I explained here, you need a theme layer to do this in Expressive.
Also, it's not much of a solution, but one can append "?view=flat" to the end of the URL for comment pages to remove all threading and display comments in the posted order.
Thanks Mike. Expressive is what I am most comfortable with (it's the first one I ever played with) but the person who mentioned the problem is using FS so I asked in both places because I reckoned I'd get some different answers one way or another (which I did.)
