Chapter 5 Dongho stopped in his tracks, gauging the distance he was about to jump before bending his knees. Bouncing on spot to get the rhythm, he pressed his feet down against the floor to push himself up in the air, over the uneven road before him.
Landing gently while taking a few steps to stop himself from falling, he turned back and smiled.
He had jumped further today.
Humming to the song his iPod was playing, Dongho smiled as he continued making his way to the café. Skipping small puddles of water, Dongho understood that it had probably rained during dawn, causing the floor to be wet. Nevermind that, the weather was too good for him to be considering things like this.
Kevin greeted him at the door, while Dongho’s face instantly brightened. “Hello, hyung! You’re early today!”
“Mm…” Kevin nodded. “I guess it isn’t a good idea, though.”
Dongho fell silent, eyeing Soohyun who was making his way towards the two waiters. “Oh.”
“Morning, Dongho.” Soohyun managed a smile, about to catch Kevin again when the younger ran away.
“Morning, hyung.” Dongho bowed a bit and frowned. “Are you still on it?”
“He doesn’t seem to listen.” Soohyun sighed. “That customer isn’t good for him.”
“What’s the reason?” Dongho questioned, closing up the gap between him and Soohyun as if trying to intimidate. “Why specifically him?”
“Just-Just…” Soohyun shook his head, turning around. “Forget it.”
-
Dongho obviously didn’t forget it, looking more intently at every action Soohyun made. Kevin puffed his cheeks due to boredom, casting a glance or two at Kibum once in a while.
“Are you bored?” Dongho asked as a conversation starter, easily knowing Kevin was indeed, bored.
“Yeah.” Kevin sulked, nodding.
“Oh yeah, I overheard your conversation with Xander-hyung the other time.” Dongho said, eyes on a watch out for customers. “About your parents nagging, going that you’re not home enough. Do they still say anything about it?”
“They grumble a little here and there, but can’t help it. They were the one asking me to get a job.” Kevin giggled.
Dongho nodded thoughtfully.
“What about your parents? How long did they take to come to terms with you being in the café more than you’re at home?” Kevin smiled, leaning forward with interests gleaming in his eyes.
The younger waiter only shook his head, chuckling. “I’m an orphan.”
Kevin gasped and quickly covered his mouth, bowing continuously. “I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to- I- I-”
“Hyung!” Dongho pressed down on both Kevin’s shoulders and tried to calm the older down, shaking him when his attempts proved futile. “It’s okay, I don’t remember having parents, so I don’t especially feel the need of them. You don’t have to feel sorry, you didn’t know anyway.”
“B-But-” Kevin bit his lower lip and frowned worriedly. To him, his parents were of utmost importance no matter how much he protests against their decisions for him. Sometimes, he gets angry with them but ultimately, he can’t live without them. Watching Dongho sadly, he wondered how the younger boy got over his childhood without someone to care for him and be there for him. “W-Where did you grow up in?”
“Orphanage.” Dongho laughed. “I’ve moved out though. Ever since I got a job here, I started planning to move out and now I’m living in a rented house. Small, but it gives me the privacy and quietness I like.”
“Ah…” Kevin tried to think of a proper reply without possibly hurting Dongho’s feelings more, still unused to the idea of Dongho not minding being an orphan.
“Let’s talk later, customers suddenly surging in.” Dongho patted Kevin’s back and the two then went on their way to take orders.
Kevin sighed, watching Dongho, now knowing there was something behind that cute smile the younger usually wears.
-
“You know? I was abandoned twice.” Dongho smiled, leaning against the coffee counter as the closing of the café approached. Dongho took a seat on one of the chairs and gestured for Kevin to do the same. “The moon is beautiful today, Kiseop-hyung would love to take pictures.”
“T-Twice?” Kevin saw the nonchalant look on Dongho’s face and frowned harder. How could Dongho be so carefree about something like that?
“Yeah, I managed to get the information out of the volunteer who took care of me since I was a baby. She didn’t want to tell me, but I was unexpectedly stubborn and a lot less emotional than most orphans. Most would cry thinking it was probably a sad past, but I was genuinely curious.” Dongho ranted off, as if recollecting the day he found out. “I don’t believe parents would abandon kids without a reason, so I just wanted to know. Not especially attached to them since I don’t remember them, but it’s human instincts to keep a child you made, no?”
Kevin nodded dumbly, not knowing what to say.
“So I was a child of a teen mom. She couldn’t take care of me any longer since her family never approved of the relationship, so she had to send me to the orphanage. After that, I was picked by a couple that thought I was cute. Later, after having their own child, they had second thoughts about keeping me. Apparently I fought with their son, and so to avoid future conflicts, I was sent back to the orphanage.” Dongho explained. “Pretty cool, yeah?”
How cool is a complicated background? Kevin angrily stated in his head. He almost wanted to scold Dongho for being untrue to himself, hiding his real feelings, unknowingly dropping a tear.
Dongho widened his eyes and wiped Kevin’s tears away. “Don’t feel sorry for me. I grew up well.”
“I’m not feeling sorry for you.” Kevin sobbed. “I’m angry at you! Why are you being untruthful to yourself! Acting like you don’t care! How could anyone not want parents?!”
Dongho cocked his head to a side, hugging Kevin as if he was the older one. “Silly. I didn’t say I don’t want parents. But I don’t have them to begin with, and I grew up without a real need for them, so I’m fine without them. I might want them, but I can live without them. It’s true.”
“He takes care of himself well, quick with adapting to a new environment and people and very independent.” Alexander cut in before Kevin could retort, a small smile in place. “Dongho grew up really well, and you need not worry, he isn’t lying. His character caused him to be a waiter, no? Having a way with words and calming down angry customers and subtly hurrying customers who take their time in ordering. It might be a foreign idea for you with a complete family to see how Dongho copes alone, but it’s also a foreign idea for Dongho to imagine having parents.”
Kevin looked at Alexander, watching the older nod with a serious side he never saw. Turning to Dongho, the younger gave him a toothy smile and hugged him once more.
Kevin then wiped his tears away, nodding with a shaky smile, but a smile nonetheless.

Yep, other characters would have their special chapter to take a break from the Kibum-mystery and Kemaru fluff, also to learn about the characters I don't usually focus on :)
