For me it's been dragons since the first time I read the Enchanted Forest Chronicles as a wee little thing. The two-year-old I watch has recently become obsessed with Mulan because it has a da-gon! So I've got her all the dragon picture books from the library and she keeps bringing them over and demanding MO DAGON! and I melt a little :)
And I just checked out Seraphina, because I'm out of Temeraire and looking for more dragons myself!

Always and forever dragons. Started when, as i child, I was in the hospital-- the night doctor stopped in to the only child in an empty huge room and explained to me that I was safe as he had a watchdragon assigned. The watchdragon would be invisible to everyone, but he was there, and when I got out of the hospital, he'd be hiding in his star, Arcturus. He told me stories of my own guardian dragon until I fell asleep, and when I woke up to another round of tests, I wasn't alone. My watchdragon was always there, after all.

Kept me going for many sad, lonely, and painful hospital stays. Finding out along the way that Arcturus was a bright star and not that hard to find in the sky was amazing too :D

So yeah, dragons are kinda majorly important to me-- when my wife asked me to be hers, she got me a dragon pendant, knowing my issues with rings. :D

Werewolves; dogheads; dragons; mermaids (and mermen!); human/snake hybrids (I liked many of the bad guys of Cobra in G.I. Joe better than the good guys!); and, who doesn't like elves? (The more Tolkienesque ones, at least.) Also, humanoids with wings--very cool!

To say why about any of them, or to even just tell some of my favorite stories of each...well, it's not always easy to say for certain. And, for just the first item on the list above--which is not exhaustive--I wrote a near-500 page dissertation from 2000 to 2006! So, to say "it's a long story" would be a superlative understatement. ;)

Hi! I thought you might be interested in knowing that snake/human hybrids are actually part of mythology from South Asia; you'll find them called nagas in Hinduism and Buddhism. :) In some places, they're still worshipped to this day and included in rituals. They are definitely one of my favorites.

Thank you, shveta_thakrar, for reminding me...I can't believe I forgot the proper name of the Nagas! (Probably because I've been spending too much time in werewolf land...!?!) I don't know too many stories of the Nagas, but I like what I've heard and seen so far...

I have a big painting of Shesha-Naag here in my room, and wanted to get one in the same style (and, I think, by the same artist) of a Naga as well that I saw at the same time, but wasn't able to...maybe some day.

I'm involved with some Anatolian and Egyptian snake deities (Chnoubis, Glykon, Agathos Daimon), and am always interested in further snake involvements in religion. ;)

Delighted to hear we share a name, and a love for Temeraire. Seraphina was already on my reading list; your recommendation moves it higher.

I grew up dreaming of riding a Pegasus! I've loved reading about mythic beasts all my life, including the ones you introduced me to by getting me to read Cathrynne Valente books.
