ONLY NATURAL
It was only natural that the first person Inagaki Goro had been longing to meet after his imposed isolation was Kimura Takuya.
Somehow, the younger Member felt like his punishment had not fully come to a close, had not completely reached a full circle, not until he had seen his fellow Member face-to-face.
Not until he had said the word, ‘Tadaima.’ [1]
He was back and he would never leave again, certainly not under such strenuous circumstances, and certainly not when the last thing he remembered was the guilt of causing Kimura-kun such worry and vexation.
Some part of him wanted to forget, forget that it all ever happened, forget that he had caused his fellow Members such pain in waiting upon an uncertain future. But another part of him simply refused to let it go.
Because as much as Goro wanted to erase the memories from his mind, the despair, the uncertainty, the guilt, the frustration, the anger, he could never bring himself to fully forget. The actual accident was a fuzzy snapshot of the past, but the consequences after were still vividly etched in his mind, the remembrance of the intense intimacy of a profound emotional bond that could only be established in the worst points of life, when Goro’s feet had been firmly planted on rock bottom and there seemed to be no way of climbing back up.
Because through all that, through the tornado that threatened to sweep him off his feet, taking him to places he never wanted to go, Goro had always had an anchor.
It started with a phone call, the shrill ringing that pierced through the all-encompassing silence of the hotel room, reminding Goro that though he was in isolation, he still had connections to the outside world. Kimura-kun had not said a word, for which Goro was grateful because he himself had no answer to his fellow Member’s unvoiced questions, no words to express the tightness in his stomach. Kimura-kun’s breath had been soft, soothing, his presence tangible even though he was not physically there. And Goro had cried, sobbing desperately into the phone, his heart crying out silently for the comfort that was being extended to him. For the first time since his crime and captivity, Goro realized the full extent of what he had gambled, what he stood to lose, in his moment of carelessness.
But his tears, hot and burning, were also healing. And for the first time, Goro felt the haze lift, the anxiety ease, washed away by his cleansing emotional flow. The tangle was slowly being unraveled, the knots undone, and it was Kimura-kun’s tender, patient and determined fingers that guided Goro as he struggled to weave the tattered ropes, his frayed nerves, into patterns of persistence and strength, a semblance of normality. Their conversations became easier, their words lighter. The phone calls made the waiting less painful, always a reminder that Goro had a place to return to, a place to belong.
So, it was only natural, the first time that Goro truly felt at home, truly felt free from the claws of his demons, it was that single moment when Kimura-kun had looked him in the eye, and said, ‘Baka.’ [2]
Never do this to me again. I don’t want an apology; I don’t need an apology. Just promise me that you will never do something so stupid, so reckless, like this ever again.
His fellow Member's physical presence, combined with all the thoughts that Kimura-kun could not express in words, the impact of those emotions that could not be fully conveyed over their numerous phone calls, clicked within Goro, unlocking the chains that had bound him.
Finally, it was all over.
And, for the last time in the circumstance that Goro had challenged and conquered, he cried.
It was expected, the emotional outburst; completely understandable.
Only natural.
