I need to read this comic for giving it a proper review... However, the cover YELLS to me about a... Oh, my God!... About a TEEN SOAP OPERA!! And that's something far from quality "Shojo", if you ask me! O.O;;
I really wonder if that comic "sells"... If that's the case, I'll have ANOTHER reason because I don't like a lot of MAINSTREAM stuff that is being sold lately D=.
Actually, there's a bit different theme with the same Teen Drama, titled "One Roof" by local comic artist but I guarantee that "One Roof" is much more preferable and MUCH BETTER than this one! The story was made so nicely I feel jealous to her.
But THIS!? This is like... .... *drinks water* ...... huff... I'm just speechless...
Well, it's sure that many of us agree that your own stuff is WAY TOO BETTER than comics like this one...
In my opinion, "market sucks" most of the time... But don't let that fact bothers you, kitty. It's just a matter of finding an editor who would like to sell more interesting stuff than average commercial stuff... Or even you could pursuit a career as an "indie" comic artist. Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird began in the business that way, at least with TMNT; and it has become pretty easy to publish and sell your own paperback comics online, like the ones sold at Lulu.com, for instance ;-).
hii ryuu, its me neon.. i think comic is comic.. n pasion is pasion.. u need to consider why they can publish this comic.. u need to respect other comic no matter what! there an art in avery way.. u need to combine between art n sell.. think!

I respect a comic which deserves respect and I'm believe i'm being objective. I have read other local comics which are BETTER than this and I say they are worth published. I won't be just jealous and say this comic is bad just for the sake of it. Believe me, I'm pretty much objective!
Try to read "Satu Atap" by Azisa Noor! I won't say that comic is bad, because it IS good!
Fan base ? Okay, since like you said, a different genre, lets not play the finger pointing and yell “they’re allowed, why not me” moanings ? Because they play in different genre, as you said
( ... )
Then start it from that. But if you want to go to commercial publishing, that “like it or not” must change into “buy it or not”, or else you’re better with doing web comic and try becoming famous from there rather than trying commercial print.
But it’s always better if you had your work printed somewhere else first for a considerable time. At least it would back you by saying “look, someone in the business actually believe I had /it/ for him to gamble his chips on me”. Try approacing local publications instead of national sized like Koloni. If you can wait and play it slow, don’t go straight to publishing a single book.
I know, but at least fan base must be started from "like it or not".
And BTW, I have started it off in Smack Jeeves, or Wordpress if you prefer it in Indonesian. I dunno how big a fan base i could make but this is a start.
And speaking about untested style etc, I've seen some in local comics which I thought it wouldn't make it but HECK they made a SEQUEL! I was pretty much a good gamble that I thought I would have a chance too.
i have experience of 2 years at least, sporadically working in other media. The sample is Carpe Diem Comic. However, the theme would be a boomerang to be in my portofolio, so I didn't show it much.
I have tried to apply in some magz, but I still don't get the chance. Yeah, story of my life...
You cant use a poll that's only 100 anonymous people. You need to find 1000 true fans. Locally. No matter what, don't get high hopes that your work will be internationally published. It's very rare to happen.
This book will not be published if it weren't for the movie ad. you shouldn't feel so bad, since this book is like you said, ugly in both art and story department, only the movie deal interests them. But this is how marketing goes, and sometimes editors too have to bow before the marketing dept.
STOP trying to publish in Indonesia if you feel that there's too many limitations. Start your own furry webcomic, BUILD your international fanbase, start PROFITING from your own fanbase. A lot has started this way, artists that had a 'not so commercial' style that publishers skipped from looking. And some actually had success.
Look at it this way. They prefer acquisition compared to building. They want to buy ripe fruits ready for picking and not making too much expense gambling on growing from seed and wait for years to know if they can even harvest it or not.
More fan base, and more peoples who would buy. I think the last part is even more important because Indonesian had low purchasing power that forced them to be selective (nice way to say lots of cheapskate who prefer free download with dozens of self-justification :D).
Yeah, thanks to our plummeting economy, prices always soar. Nowadays I only buy books that's useful or inspiring, and had to rent the rest of the titles from libraries.
I hate to admit this, but I'm very selective when it comes to local comic books... It has to be really good before I even spend money on it...
Yeah, I have tried to make a polling in the net and it's even less than 50 people to know. The "live poll" has better result.
This comic book is utter crap, not because of my sensitivity or jealousy. If I feel jealous, i will give that point to "Satu Atap", because DAMN that comic is GOOD! I won't say a comic is not good if it's GOOD! But this one I'm talking about is like slamming my face... ukh...
And BTW, I have started one in Smack Jeeves, let's see if I could seed a fan base from there. I really have no idea where to start from this point.
