Photography is the art of the eyes, catching a moment in time and keeping it still forever. It was my hobby; my passion next to singing and dancing. And almost anywhere, I was carrying my camera.
Today, I’ve been busy rounding the whole park for moments to capture when someone tickled me from behind, making me almost leap in alarm. I looked back angrily at whoever it may be but then my rage faltered when a slender lady in a white top and blue jeans beamed in front of me. Her jet black hair was flowing beautifully in waves as she tossed it back and grinned at me. Her tan skin made a beautiful contrast against her white shirt, making out a pleasant view. Then something blocked her chocolate eyes. And something bright flashed before my eyes.
“Gotcha.” She muttered.
“Hey! No fair! I was unprepared!” I shouted, almost like a kid.
“What? How could you prepare when you were spacing out? Like hello?” she chuckled.
“You’re mean Shinju!” I pouted. She was my neighbor, Shinju.
“Oh jeez, Yuto. Tell me something I don’t know.” Then she laughed some more.
“What are you doing here, stalking me?” I snapped.
She rolled her eyes and raised her SLR camera to get a picture of a falling leaf. “Me? Stalking you? Come on. You’re just paranoid Yuu-chan.”
“Stop calling me Yuu-chan! It’s - it’s embarrassing!” I could feel my face turn red in a split second and turned away.
“Fine, fine. But I think I like it that way.” She murmured. “Oh well. Have it your way.”
“I see you bought a new cam.” I said.
She shook her head slightly. “Nah, I just borrowed this from dad. My camera’s a bit cranky these days so I had it repaired.”
“Well, since you’ve acquired an SLR camera just like mine,” - I think I saw her blush - “let’s take pictures!” I said enthusiastically.
“Sure.” She answered immediately. “The one with the ugliest - or let me say, least beautiful picture gets to treat the other for ice cream. Okay?”
“Hey! I just said that we’d take pictures! No betting!” I chuckled.
She just rolled her eyes. “See you after 30 minutes? My favorite flavor is chocolate by the way.”
“Don’t be too sure of yourself missy.” I grinned at her. And then, our contest started.
It took me a couple of minutes to look for a shady part of the park, where the light of the sun pierced through the branches and leaves of the oak tree that made a beautiful scene. It was like being in heaven, but not really up there. I took a shot of it, then readjusted the settings of my camera and took another shot. It was beautiful, but it felt like it was lacking something. I just couldn’t put my fingers on it. I raised my camera again and there was something beautiful standing a couple of feet away from the scene; like an angel in white, making its way through the grass. I clicked and my camera fluttered a couple of times. I smiled.
I walked the whole perimeter of the park following that angel and taking snapshots of her inconspicuously. I could’ve sworn at one time that she saw what I was doing but I quickly hid myself behind the fountain where a cupid statue was urinating. My heart thumped and pounded against my heart but it was in a good way. I could feel blood rushing to my face and it made me smile.
30 minutes have passed. I went back to the benches, staring at the collection I had in my camera with wide eyes. This time it was not because of the beauty of the picture - and not because it was horrible either- but because I finally get to realize who the person on the picture was. Yeah, I’m that vapid sometimes but hey, I was blinded by beauty. Shut it. :P
“Yuu-chan!” Shinju exclaimed, sitting beside me on the bench.
I looked around tensely and hid my camera behind my back. Fresh sweat was forming on my forehead that it almost made me frown. “W - what?” I gulped down the words that it went out like I was doing baby talk.
“Let me see your works. Here is mine!” she beamed.
I shook my head, face glowing red.
“Why? What’s wrong? Are you already conceding to my talents?” she said proudly.
“No.” I tersely said. “WAIT!” I shouted as she grabbed my camera and scanned my files.
“What are you so scared abou - ” she broke off, pushing buttons on my camera.
To those who don’t know what the contents of my camera are, they consist mostly of pictures of Shinju, the angel I was saying a while ago. Right.
She grinned.
I felt like all my blood has left my body and went to my head, on the verge of an explosion.
“It’s beautiful, I should say. But it lacks one more picture.” She leaned on me and raised the camera in front of us. “Say cheese!”
I made an awkward smile, face still red. “About that…”
She shook her head. “Okay. Let’s get those ice creams already.” She stood up.
“Wait, I still haven’t seen your pictures.” I protested.
“Are you saying I’m not beautiful?” she pouted and I almost forgot to breathe.
“No… It’s not that. I mean, you’re conceding?” I said in disbelief.
“Yeah, that last picture nailed it. What do you want?”
“Chocolate is good.”
“Sure.”
