Sing it. That sort of anachronistic interjection really, really fries me - it's so unimaginative, like they're incapable of looking at a historical situation from anything but one perspective. It reminds me of a history of Manhattan I read a while ago - very good, on the whole, but the historian insisted on referring to various Dutch merchants and politicians as "right wing" and "left wing" when their social world was so different that those terms (which didn't even exist then) were functionally meaningless. For Christ's sake, man, just describe them in THEIR OWN context.
