The Refining Process

( There's a tendency within fandom to judge films almost as enemies to the canon. Even though we accept that by virtue of the fact that it must be different to fit the constraints of film, we seem to be less forgiving about omissions and alterations than maybe we should be. It's easy to realise why. We're in the middle of the series in the films and books. Nearly every character can make difference in the final book. Minor characters can become major, linkages between plot threads can emerge. There's still everything to play for. )

I mean to say how much I liked this essay, but I couldn't do it justice. Have you noticed that Chris Rankin (aka Parcy Weasley) has been recruited for the 5th film? Now, I think that's interesting.

Thank you! While of course the films are constrained by time, casting, etc, I think it is very possible that JK Rowling must over the course of the writing and filming say for one or two things, 'no, this has to stay in.' I don't think the films are signposts in themselves, but I do believe certain things might nudge us towards the finale.

I hadn't heard about Percy in OotP, which is very interesting. I think I'm going to have to skim the book again to see where he pops up, and what's happening around that time!
