Think it was someone at APOD that fell asleep at the wheel for that one!

I agree with you, and points for your dimplomacy in the use of the term "garish muddying at that". An example of tactility at its finest!

The grey blobs provide a neat 3D effect though. To my eye, it does indeed look like mud splashed on the windshield. The camera (Instamatic on auto-focus, obviously) sharply defines those close up, and the technicolor morass is consequently racked out of focus, blurry -- and therefore more distant. :-)
