Holi Moley!

Today, in India, is Holi. A day when the second you walk out your door, you are fair game to be dusted with colored powder, smeared with colored paste, doused in colored water, dunked in colored puddles and pelted with colored water balloons. No one is safe. You know I was all up in that.

Every apartment building and every empty lot is home to a mini-Holi party. The music blares, the powder flies, the water sprays, and everyone dances like mad in a swirling whirpool of what is essentially an ocean of Kool-Aid. Sometimes competing parties will throw paint balloons over the fence at their rival party. This creates interesting splatter patterns all over the buildings.

Every party I went to, someone ended up grabbing my arm, and pulling me to a new party, until I'd danced with every person in Chandivali.

At one temple, the folks went so mad with excitement that they started diving fully clothed and fully technicolored into the temple's well. A holy man ran out of the building and chased us all out.

I wish that the "save-for-web" option in Photoshop did justice to how brightly colored these photos are. I also wish someone had told me that this stuff didn't come off. It was an amazing day. Now I've got to go to work completely tinted purple.
