Yes, Richard, the new format is a little more attractive. For some reason your main body text shows rather large, but I've been playing with my display functions, so it might be my machine. If I set my "view" text size to smaller, it's a comfortable middle size text here. I still don't like the way your comment function works very much, though.

THanks for the feedback, I think your site looks a lot more attractive now too. What do you mean about the comment function, I don't know if Livejournal provide you with any other way of doing it.

I don't like where I live much, but your impressions demonstrate why living in a large Chinese city would be so much worse. In my experience so far, for the most part, they are truly living embodiments of hell on earth. The only thing that causes me to shiver as much as the idea of living in such a city is to imagine myself living somewhere like Bucharest, which actually, might be a lot better than Dalian, but I still wouldn't want to set foot there.

I'm curious to know what you like about Lisboa.

Ja ja, as they say around here, I'm tempted to sit right down and write something beginning with the words 'I've sometimes been asked here to provide some advice or tips about Lisbon, given that I recently spent four years living there ( ... )

I thought Lisboa was cool in a creepy sort of way that made me want to get out but also want to linger. Everything feels very noirish and sort of hidden away. I actually found the people to be much more agreeable, less nationalistic and speaking better English than in Spain, and consequently, although they are geographically and linguistically close as can be, the cultures are totally different.

Cafe in Spain: 10 billion people all together being noisy and loud.
Cafe in Lisboa: Quiet and brooding, an attractive women with dark hair sits in the corner reading the book.

I'll have you guess which is more my style. But yeah, the food is terrible and there are some very weird things about it I thought...the way I described both Porto and Lisboa to my family was that it felt like a noir film...some majestic old buildings, but very faded, graveyards with..twisted wooden crosses and skulls?!..again, cool but creepy.

S'all true, but try speaking to that same brooding woman about that same brooding book every day for five years...

I have to provide a link to this tremendous William Gibson article from Wired, which is about Singapore but rang so many bells in terms the kind of place that the authorities want to build where China used to stand - a 'single-party capitalist technocracy', 'a place where the physical past has ceased to exist':

Reddi Kilowatt's Singapore looks like an infinitely more liveable version of convention-zone Atlanta, with every third building supplied with a festive party-hat by the designer of Loew's Chinese Theater. Rococo pagodas perch atop slippery-flanked megastructures concealing enough cubic footage of atria to make up a couple of good-sized Lagrangian-5 colonies. Along Orchard Road, the Fifth Avenue of Southeast Asia, chocka-block with multi- level shopping centers, a burgeoning middle class shops ceaselessly. Young, for the most part, and clad in computer-weathered cottons from the local Gap clone, they're a handsome populace; they look good in their shorts and Reeboks and Matsuda shades ( ... )

Boring people are always bored, no matter where do they go or what do they see.
