Crappy TV shows

Jun 03, 2009 11:42

Seems like everyone else is becoming obsessed with "good" television shows lately. I.E. Lost, Heroes, The Wire, etc... Fortunately I haven't gotten hooked on a TV show since Deadwood... until now. And what show did I decide to start watching? One of the most brain-rotting mindlessly formulaic sword and sorcery rip-offs ever to be put to the small ( Read more... )

I watched a couple episodes of it once and did in fact find it entertaining. It's almost like a parody of itself.

I must admit, much to my own beleaguerment, I watched the entire first season in 3 days. I agree with you that it parodies itself, and the entire genre, but it takes what it's doing VERY seriously. Sometimes(well, most times) this is unintentionally funny.

For some odd reason it reminds me of Star Trek: The Next Generation. It took itself seriously, tackling issues of the day, whereas the first one was really nothing but camp. The Next Generation would fall into camp here and there, but knew how to get back out again without becoming nothing but camp.

I suppose I could describe it as Hercules The Legendary Journeys: The Next Generation.

To me it seems like what Krod Mandoon ought to be. It does take itself very seriously at times, and that's part of why it works. Or perhaps I should say the actors take it very seriously. They've got those ridiculous plotlines and trite scripts and they play it totally straight and God bless them. One of the two episodes I saw was about old dude keeping the two main characters, who had been possessed by ghosts, from getting it on. It was awesomely ridiculous.

"I suppose I could describe it as Hercules The Legendary Journeys: The Next Generation." Isn't that kind of what Andromeda was?

I never even heard of Andromeda. But, yeah, that episode was awesome. I wish I found out about this show when I was IN New Zealand. I would have found a way to make Bridget Regan marry me. Probably through my tried and true method of getting the girl, blackmail.

I never saw this... sillypuck June 11 2009, 22:54:17 UTC
...but I had my mother describe it to me, in detail, over a series of ahopping trips. As she is not a fantasy geek like me, it was all new to her: "And there's a wise, mysterious old man! Who has to help the orphaned protagonist find his destiny! And a clan of sorcerers who can't use their powers too often, because otherwise they'll succumb to bloodlust! And the real villain is actually the time-travelling villain's kid!" We did discuss how the powerful artifact everybody was after basically seemed to be a Macguffin, and I pointed out that in practically every fantasy story (all the bad ones, anyway), there is always an Object. Now my mom is trying to use bad fantasy tropes to teach me valuable life lessons.

I meant "shopping". Ahopping is not a new fad in St. Louis.
Also, Dexter and Arrested Development are good.
