The first crop of hay is laid out in the fields, and it smells amazing, especially on a damp cool night like this, with top notes of honeysuckle.

Saw Prince Caspian at the local crappy theater with Louis and Luna tonight. Thoughts: ( Thoughts )

farm, narnia, movies

I did feel like the action was emphasized to the detriment of the characters

I've found that the case in nearly never movie or tv show I've seen for ages. *sigh*

It was especially noticeable in this, I thought (though knowing the books so well may have been a disadvantage, too), but I know what you mean. There is a tendency to go "Oooh, look what we can do with SFX now! And the kids and 18-35 male demographic love it!" I like it too, but occasionally I miss the other.

I've often thought writers/producers should look at the stories and ask themselves- are they doing X because they can or because it's integral tot he story?

I haven't seen Prince Caspian yet, and probably won't till it makes it to the $2 theaters or comes out on DVD

The farm is just so beautiful. *sigh* Makes me wish I didn't live in town. I used to live out in the country. Where I grew up it's flat as a pancake and very few trees. (But I still miss it.)

I miss it when I'm not here, too. Sigh. I've stayed in some flat rural country before, as well, and it's got its own kind of beauty. Amazing sunsets, for one thing!

I saw the movie today, and really enjoyed it! (Of course, I read the book ages and ages ago, and only once, so I wasn't very attuned to changes.)

I wonder how they make decisions like that.
There's an FAQ on the IMDB site that talks a bit about the decision to make them Mediterranean here.

I saw it at the wee local theatre, amid a sea of dwarves children. I may have to see it at a theatre with a better sound system!

Yay, I'm glad you enjoyed it! It was an enjoyable movie. I look forward to seeing it again (like you, in a theater with better sound, not to mention seats that don't make my coccyx ache). The first time seems to be my time for crazy fan nitpicking - with the first movie I got pretty distracted by the fact that a character was casually riding a unicorn. Heh. But I love that movie!

Thanks for the link about the Telmarines. I had wondered if it had something to do with the pirate ancestry, but then I thought there were all races of pirates... In another book, the Telmarines in Calormen are portrayed with a lot of negative Middle Eastern stereotypes, which made me uncomfortable when I read it again a couple of years ago. Mostly I'm just hoping the casting and accents in PC won't be a big deal, because they don't have to be.

I wanna see Reepicheep I LOVED Reepicheep when I was a child!!

I had forgotten about Jill Pole OMG How did I forget??

Argh and now I am the point where - *knowing* that the film is substantially different from the book - I do not want to go reread (because then I'll notice *every* little detail). And needing to go reread because I don't want to wait!!!

I couldn't even get trailers to work for on YouTube yesterday *sniffs*

Reepicheep rocks the house. One of Lewis's best animal characters, IMO. :)

Oy, dilemma! Well, I can say I don't think the *spirit* of the book is changed. There are just some different scenes, but I think they work well for the movie in many respects. I'd maybe compare it to the Prisoner of Azkaban book/movie. I don't know! My mom went ahead and re-read the book even though she had read the reviews and knew there were differences, but my niece decided to wait til after the movie to finish reading it. For me, I know the books... well, better than the back of my hand, so there's no way I could "unread" them. *g*

Would trailers on NarniaWeb, Apple, Yahoo or Disney work for you, maybe? The NarniaWeb site has downloads, though the one I tried was going pretty slowly.
