The premise of that show sounds a lot like the book The World Without Us. I got that for Christmas this year and started reading it enough to see that it's an excellent book. I just didn't have the level of concentration I wanted to give to it, so I haven't gone on to read the rest of it yet. (In the book, the author specifies that he is discussing what would happen if people really did just suddenly up and vanish, whether by 100% rapture or alien abduction, rapid-spreading incurable virus, magic, whatever.) I bet it would be really cool to see some of these things visualized--but I want to use my imagination for that when I read the book. Maybe I'll look for this special on DVD after I've read it, though.

Now that you mention it, I thought the History Channel special sounded like a book I heard discussed on NPR (Science Friday, I think) a few months ago. It must be that book, and I'm sure they're related. Huh, I wonder if the author was one of the experts they interviewed for the show!

The animation and stuff they used really was neat, but I agree, read the book first and use your imagination. I noticed that the DVD is already available, so you shouldn't have any trouble renting it or something when you're ready.

I need to put that book on my library reserve list.
