I just made a student in a wheelchair take the elevator downstairs to smoke his cigarette. There's no smoking allowed on the outer walkways of the building or within 20 feet of any entrance. But I feel like a heel. Sort of.

On the bright side, this is possibly the student who gave me the love letter, so maybe now he won't like me as much.

i suck, teaching

Pff. Smoking is still a choice.

And even if it weren't (and I do understand that it can be very hard to quit) I don't see anything wrong with using designated areas. Sigh.

Good for you! Everyone should follow the rules, no exceptions.

I agree, which is why I followed up with him the same as I do with all the others. Especially when he tried to protest that he *couldn't* go down, indicating his broken feet. But how did he get up in the first place, I'd like to know? I'm so tired of dealing with adult children.

there is an entire body of law structured around the notion that people with physical challenges should have the same access to things as everyone else.

Thank you. I do believe in what I'm doing, or I wouldn't do it. Sometimes it's just hard being the hardass.

Though when he tries to hide the burning cigarette inside his coat sleeve like a guilty 12-year-old, it makes it a little easier. ::rolls eyes::

Ha ha ha ha. Yes, he exhaled a huge plume of smoke, withdrew his left hand into his coat sleeve, looked at me, and denied that he was smoking. They think I'm an idiot! I told him his coat was going to catch on fire. But reflecting on it later, I kind of wish I had just stood there and called his bluff. How long does it take a nylon jacket to melt?

It's actually not too balmy around here this week (although yes, we're "mid-South") - 40s or so, and raining - but I can only imagine how much more difficult it is in the real wintery lands.

I think it was at least a bit twisted of him to look me in the eye, exhaling smoke like a chimney, and tell me he wasn't smoking. So, you know. ::headdesk::

Man, your icon is SO PERFECT for today.

I was not born yesterday nor did I just fall off a turnip truck hello!

That's also how I feel when they turn in plagiarized papers I can uncover with a simple google search. Especially when they don't even bother to reformat or take out the Wikipedia text links. ::headwall::
