"Where did you train? ON A FARM?"

I finally had time to go see Man of Steel! It was a semi-impulsive decision: I was thinking I could go this weekend, and when I checked the showtimes after class at 2:55 today, there was a showing at 3:55--just enough time for me to get home and take Memphis for a short walk before zipping over to the theater and paying matinee price. We are comrades in spoilerphobia! I was falling asleep as I finished posting stuff last night, and this morning I woke up with a fear that I'd somehow messed up my coding and some spoilers would be accidentally exposed. Whew, glad it worked!

I agree with all your likes and dislikes - particularly the Lois not being as dim as they usually portray her (also I kinda have a crush on Amy Adams in all her adorableness, so that was an extra bonus). As the Pop Culture Happy Hour crew put it, an awful lot of the movie was akin to building destruction porn, and I think we could have gotten a much tighter story if they had just left some of that out or, as you said, moved it to a location lacking all those buildings. I get that CGI folks are great at that sort of destruction, but it was excessive here. I also really liked Henry Cavill's performance as Superman. He had just the right balance of heart, confusion, and compassion (also, he just looked right).

I wish we could have seen it together. I saw it alone and had no one but listening to the PCHH crew to react to it with, and they mostly hated the movie.

I would love to have seen it with you! I saw it alone, too, which I'm sure is why I was compelled to write about it on LJ before I went to bed.

I think you're right. Maybe more time for character development or at least a shorter movie. It really didn't have to be 2 1/2 hours long.

I liked Henry Cavill, too! If he were my first Superman, I would probably still fall in love with Superman. :) If there's another movie planned, I look forward to seeing his take on "undercover reporter" Clark.

Aw, man. I'm glad I put off listening to the PCHH where they talked about Man of Steel. I plan to listen this weekend, so I'll brace myself for their dislikes. Oh well! I'm most curious about Glen's opinion, of course.

Glen talked surprisingly little on the podcast about Man of Steel, which probably says more about his opinion of it than anything else does.

I had a quite similar reaction to you. I had some major issues with all the property destruction and Superman's all-too-willing participation therein. Like you, I thought he should have been trying his damndest to move the fight out of town. Other than that, most of my quibbles with the film were pretty minor.

Now that I've seen the film, I think "The Last Son of Krypton" would have been a much better title. It sounds dramatic, it's thematically perfect for the film, and would have reserved the far more generic "Man of Steel" for a sequel.
