That sounds about right! He's not the kind of dog that survives well on his own, but he's an awesome contributor to group survival. When you get past the bumbling. :)
I think it's more than just that Conner has a giant Cutter sized hole in his heart - it's that Phillip is the first person to actively include Conner because he's Conner. I mean, he became part of the original group partly because he was in the right place at the right time (or wrong place, depending on your perspective) and then he dogged them until they decided he was useful. But Phillip actively pursued Conner for this new position. That's got to be a huge ego boost and one that is hard to resist.
So why does Matt say he doesn't remember school? Sadly, you won't get much more on this until, I think, episode 7. He's quite the enigma, isn't he?
Oh, that's a very good thought about Connor. He has good reasons to feel kind of insecure because you're right, he's always having to prove himself in order to be accepted and included. Once he did prove himself to Cutter, Cutter was an advocate. Interesting about Phillip, and if he's doing this to manipulate Connor because he did a very shrewd assessment of what Connor needed, that's impressive.
(I have seen the whole series, but I'm going through this re-watch as if I hadn't. I didn't do much thinking at all first time through. *g*)
