"But, Mooooommmmm, I don't wanna eat my acacia leaves!"
Hee! He does look like he's spitting something out, doesn't he?
I love the spread of the fingers, because it's a good illustration of how to tell the difference between possum tracks and raccoon tracks. (The angle of the thumbprint)
Oh, your zoo sounds lovely! I'm happy to have inspired you. And any place with the phrase "city-wide panda hunt" in the bio has to be worth a visit. :)
OMFSM that bamboo forest is incredible! I just made it my wallpaper. It reminds me of some scenes in House of Flying Daggers but more *real* than the ethereal bamboo forests in the movie.
I'm going to aim to get to the Nature Centre in the next couple of weeks. It's only a 10 min bus ride from two blocks away and it'll give me a break from revision :-)
GIRAFFE!!! I love your zoo pics. I may have missed something. Are you a zoo volunteer or are you just someone who is lucky enough to spend lots of time at the zoo and share your pis with us?
My birthday present to myself for the past three years has been a zoo membership so I can go as often as I want. Since I don't really do... well, anything else to get out of the house when I'm not at work, it's really been great. It's about two miles from where I work, and it's such a pleasant, safe place to hang out. They even have free wi-fi in the pavilion! Sometimes I go there just to grade papers and take breaks to visit the otters. I would like to be a volunteer, but my weekend schedule (leaving town to be with my family) is too irregular for me to be able to make a good commitment.
It's nice to have a place like that. I have MAJOR zoo issues, and our local zoo is not a good one. In fact, it's one of the few areas where SF really sucks. I'm not sure there should be a zoo here at all because of the climate, but that goes back to my issues so...never mind.
Yours looks lovely and your gift to yourself is brilliant.
::nods:: I can understand zoo issues. I think for a small city zoo, ours is pretty decent and they're working on making it better, but there are certain animals that I avoid because I'm really not sure they should be in zoos at all, no matter how well they're treated. It can be a dilemma.
Oh, thank you for identifying the bird! I don't know my wading/fishing birds very well, and I hadn't gotten around to hunting it down in my book. They're very pretty!

I agree. It's kind of peaceful, and it's amazing that it's actually a grass.
Ooh, you reminded me -- you should check out this photo http://www.flickr.com/photos/marser/2727537497/sizes/l/
