so unlikely and yet perfectly adapted to their environment
Yes, so true! I envy some of their adaptions, in fact, especially those eyelashes that can screen out sand and shade their eyes from the sun. :)
I think I've heard of prairie dogs as exotic pets - I'm sure ranchers would rather them be in people's homes than making holes in the ground. I just hope the folks keeping them as pets are keeping them at least in pairs since they're so social.
Camel people tell me that camels can be stubborn but if you treat them with respect and know how to work with them, they're not bad. I think they have a lot of dignity, and they don't like to have it impugned. *g*
Prairie dogs are the meerkats of North America, I guess. :) When I went out west with my parents last year, I saw a few from the windows of our train, but close up I've only seen them in the zoo.

Thanks - I liked the icon for the animal sentiment as well as the possible implication that I don't play so well with humans. *g*

Oh! And I forgot to say that prairie dogs are adorable, too. I read recently about people keeping them as pets. ::wants::

And the camel is great fun. I've heard they're cantankerous buggers but they do look great.

(Somehow, in my head, that was the camel.)
