Yuletide Letter

I went back and forth about whether or not to write one of these since I don't think I did last year, but the one I read from my requester was actually quite helpful so I figured... why not ( Read more... )

Out of curiosity, what fandoms did you request this year? I have a vaguely proprietary interest :).

Sorry this took so long to answer, vacations tend to make me internet-ly unreliable.

So! Two of my requests were, I like to think, entirely predictable. Baccano is one of my current obsessions and it seems to be positively begging for fic. The Red Star remains one of the greatest stories I know and I can count the number of fics I've read for it written by someone other than me on the fingers of one hand, even if that hand has had some amputations due to frostbite complications.

The third is actually something of a surprise, and one I have to take some responsibility for. I was pretty much absolutely sure that Gunslinger Girl would make the list again this year even if I ignored the nomination process, so I just expected to see it there when I signed up. But it was nowhere to be found. I definitely should have made sure it got in.

Of course I have many, many loves, so I fell back David Weber's War God's Own fantasy series because I still think it's his best work, under-read, and under-ficced.

Those are my three, then,
Ana

Yeah, I was surprised to not see GG there, too. The only one you listed that I know at all is War God's Own, and it's not my favorite of his (sorry!), so nothing that I'm writing. Oh, well!

Haha, no worries. It's not like it's great literature, or anything. It's just Weber at what I think of as his best: straight-up black hat/white hat, good vs. evil epic fiction. Which is, in my opinion, a sadly underappreciated genre. The (perfectly valid) preference for ambiguous stories means that most people aren't as interested in this sort of stuff.

Ah, well.

Also, you should get familiar with The Red Star and Baccano! as they are both excellent.

Randomly,
Ana

Oh! I'm so glad I checked your LJ again randomly! You didn't have a letter when I first got my prompt, but thanks for putting one up!

I have to confess I think you're going to hate me, because I don't know any of the three fandoms you mentioned up there. Damn. I'm so sorry-you ended up having your prompt assigned to someone who only had your backup movie fandom listed. I'm doing my best with it, and I hope you don't hate it too much, and again, I'm really, really sorry. Do you have any requests for this?

I make it a point never to hate anyone who writes fic for me no matter the reason. And, really, Mr. and Mrs. Smith is some thing I've been wanting fic for for a long time, so disappointment isn't something you have to worry about ( ... )
