The old southern gentry habits refuse to die when the girls were all brought up to be pretty, polite, be the perfect hostess and most importantly - to catch a good rich husband of a proper family. :-p

Too true. It's kind of sad to see it in otherwise intelligent girls, and frustrating when it keeps them from taking advantage of their opportunities, educational and otherwise.
