Don't give up on it, don't turn your back on your heart and soul. Do you have your story in outline form, with each chapter and their details listed out? This will show you and help you evolve your story in order to bring the story, and the reader, from beginning to end, and enable you to plan and shape the story flow at each point and make the proper changes as needed. You mentioned cracks in the foundation. Well, a well developed outline will help you to fill those cracks and plan the proper bridges to cross over the ones too big to fill.

I just spent a year rewriting a novel I wrote 20 years ago and have made it three times better in the process. The resulting first draft is also three times longer than a normal novel should be so I have a lot of editing ahead of me. But at one time I was ready to give up on and I am sure glad that I did not. Please don't give up on your dream. You will possibly not forgive yourself if you do--I know that I could not if I had done so.
