Adventures in Valentine's Day Commerce

Feb 12, 2008 23:28

I've been single for seven years now. In that time, I've become increasingly less patient with the pablum fed to me by advertisers in the form of honouring my grandparents, my administrative professional, or my confessor (yes -- there's a National Clergy Appreciation Day). I just found out in my research for this post that Americans have been ( Read more... )

valentine's day, advertising, relationships

That with the V-day cellphones has been launched here in Italy a few years ago. In a lot of places they make "V-day offers" to buy phones for each other, getting half the price off the second.

The sad thing are not the offers.. that's the market using its opportunities. The sad thing are the stupid people falling for this shit. Usually I have to say though (at least here in Italy) it is generally the women who whine and nag and pout if they don't get big stuff for V-day. I have heard the teenage brats on the subway bragging to each other what their "boyfriends" gave them for V-day.. and couldn't believe the shit. Where do they get that money from? Stupid parents? Stealing? Methinks we have the most imbecile generation yet to grow up there..

And not just 'cuz I'm single myself, but because I have more than two braincells to rub together and I hate hate hate HATE having something so relentlessly thrown up in my face as I do V-Day and all the commercial fucking crap that comes with it.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

You know that, were I in Your Fair City, I'd SO be at both of a certain heroic soprano's "Anti V-Day" gatherings. OH yeah.

And though I cringe at admitting it (because hey, the truth hoits), I think Dadi's right about this being the most pandered-to generation that's now reached dating age. Gack.

I'd offer to split this lovely bottle of Glenlivet French Oak with you I got earlier tonight, but.... eh. It'll keep. Besides, I'm liking it SO much I may not share it with anyone! Heh....

Oh, and due to what you listed as your "music" playing while you made your entry, all's I can say is....

Klaatu....
Barada......
Nikto!

(which, incidentally, happens to be the text of my scrolling-marquee screensaver....)

Thank you for such a fantastic post. Yes, yes and YES.

I'll be buying myself a refridgerator. Doesn't that sound fun?

Nice to 'see' you again!
