Tales of the Dying Earth is the kind of book I mostly buy, sight unseen, based off the sheer number of recommendations from others.

I've found that, even if I don't care for the book much, it's often an educational experience.

In this case, though, Dying Earth was both a good book and an educational one.  Let me explain the latter first:
