I love those crazy-absurdist space opera novels that start out as some kind of (to me) mundane near future sci-fi novel, but then go nutso as each chapter tries to top the previous one. Other examples I can think of: Glory Road (Alan Dean Foster), where the aliens just keep getting more and more powerful; some book where the main character is abducted by giant lobster-like aliens but escapes and eventually leads an attack on the alien homeworld (the name of the trilogy escapes me); L. Ron Hubbard's absurd Battlefield Earth, where the "good guys" ultimately win by striking a deal with the universal bankers; Illegal Aliens, where the humans' weapons somehow just keep getting more and more powerful; the list goes on. I'll have to get my hands on a copy of this novel.
