So, in several places in the world, the government - usually by way of the church - is of the opinion that providing adequate, accessible birth control will bring about widespread sexual immorality ( Read more... )

People need to educate themselves about sex and the consequences of sex. It's part of what's screwing up progress in the world today.

If we get rid of the ridiculous idea that learning about sex = more likely to HAVE sex right away, we'd have overcome so many obstacles and perhaps a number of problems in the world would be more manageable, because people would realise the alternative that's been there all along.

I maintain that sex education is a form of birth control, and perhaps the most important one.

not just that, but the lack of sex education has (in part) helped maintain rigid patriarchal standards and values in countries in the Middle East and Africa. If a woman doesn't bleed during her first time having sex, for example, she's seen as a disgrace to her family and her husband because by default that means she wasn't a virgin when she got married.

Unless people stop seeing sex education as something "dirty" because it's about - gasp! - our private parts, we really have to right to shout accusations of sexual immorality to those who learn about condoms and abortions.

Ignorance of any form should be considered intolerable, but particularly ignorance about something so goddamn basic. =/

My problem isn't with the church - well, it is, but that's not the point. My problem is that the government seems to have forgotten that they're not supposed to be taking direction from the church.

Dude, it's a pet peeve of mine too. Hence, rant. Seriously, there are statistics that prove teenagers are less likely to have sex early if they're educated early, so there is literally no excuse here.

Could you eat them on a train? Could you eat them in the rain?

Sorry, I got the strangest Green Eggs and Ham vibe from your rant ^_^ I agree that education is one of the strongest deterants against sex, which is why I find it so disappointing when secular schools and governments bend to a religious morality on matters such as sex ed. We don't elect gods, so I rather think they ought to stay out of our government -- but perhaps that's just me.

Secular institutions running on religious rule is one of the things that angers me most in the world. Separation of church and state is supposed to exist for a reason.

One hundred fucking percent agree. This actually reminds me of something Dan Savage ran on his column, about straight kids having more unprotected anal sex because anal sex is "safer". As in, no pregnancies and you can still be a "virgin" in the straight sex use of the term. Nevermind that, you know, you can get STDs and, oh, AIDS/HIV. No, the only danger in sex is reproduction.

*headdesk* The stupid that surrounds this issue just makes my head hurt. Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to sex ed.

Not to mention that pregnancies have resulted from unprotected anal sex as well.

You know, the concept of virginity in general, and the fetishization fit, has been pissing me off lately something fierce. There needs to be a movement. I'd start it if I could figure out where to get a bullhorn. =/
