Thank you, thank you, thank you for this. It hurt in all the very best ways possible, and saddest of all is how much you really made me believe this, for both of them. Oh you poor, poor, fucked up Batkids.
But there are really no words for how much I love the way you managed to make the sex a function of the characters and the way in which they interact (and fail to interact) so often in canon, how in so many ways they represent oppositional sides of Batman to the point where it's really no wonder why it's almost impossible for them to connect through anything but that mutual, irreconcilable loss. And it would have been so easy for that to just make them distant and unlikable, but instead the brokenness of what they're doing and how they're doing it just brings them in closer, and I really just want to reach through the story and hug them.
He feels himself tingling everywhere they're touching, and everywhere he can feel her look, and everywhere he knows Bruce looked. Even if it was to check on his progress and to ( ... )

I'm so glad you liked it and thought it was true to the characters, because at some points I was getting afraid that I was making this too much about Bruce. I ship the hell out of the concept that everyone in the Batfamily has had a crush on the boss at some point, but I still wanted this to be about Dick and Cass and not just about the massive Bruce/Dick, Bruce/Cass they wanted it to be. They had to be sympathetic for each other, no matter how disconnected and failing at coping they are, because they know exactly what the other is going through.
The real tragedy of Bruce and Dick, I think, is that nothing Bruce has ever done in action has been enough to make up for what Dick needs to hear in words; that he's loved, needed, and wanted as much as he loves and needs in turn.Bruce is very, very bad for people. The more he cares about someone, the more he'll hurt them however ( ... )

I have two big rules: 1)you have to want Bruce (or Batman), 2)you have to want Dick (or Robin). If the planets are in the right configuration, you get hit by the double-whammy.
This fic let me write emo meta all over my 'you-know-they're-even-more-fucked-up-than-usual' canon and play with my huge kink of shared unrequitedness. And I'm so glad the smut worked! That's one thing the worried pron writer never tires of hearing, really. :D
