Oh man. In a neutral, spoiler-free way, these are some good observations (way smarter than the ones I had halfway through the series).
I would love to see these girls hang out with Robins, but alas, at the game where I play Tim I also play Homura, so it's tough without making things very playercestuous.
I also have thoughts about Mami and Homura as foils, especially their way of being in the world.
Mami's wish was to stay alive by connecting, which is materialized by the ribbons she uses to link things; but they're bonds in all senses of the word, and they're what get her killed in the end, because her mission as a MG is her bond. Homura, on the other hand, seems to cultivate being unattached; Kyubey claims she's unpredictable (as if his rules didn't apply to her), her moe appeal comes from her aloofness, she doesn't want to make promises, and of course she can disappear/teleport.
On the other hand, Mami doesn't come clean with her feelings until Madoka tells her she won't be alone anymore, and Homura is extremely involved in making sure Madoka doesn't. Connection is a two-way street, much like friendship.
And then you have Kyouko, about whom I don't know enough to say if she considers her word a bond too.
I sure am full of observations that don't relate to the plot.

I think, thematically at least, you're right about Mami.

What if she and Madoka really did know one another before the series?
