Mmmn, I have shivers. I love the imagery in this; perfect Tom, especially with the constant animal references. And I love the idea of him as a child, and how you've explored the Parseltongue ability.
But the thing that I think I love best is referring to Dumbledore as a "word wizard". Perfect. ♥
Ohh. thin candle of a man blew me away totally, but by the time I got that far there wasn't much of me left to blow away anymore, because this is a goddamned amazing piece.

The longview on evolution and civlisation is an unusual and highly apt way for us to steal, through your words, into Tom's way of thinking. It perfectly foreshadows the man - and monster - Tom will become.
My only quibble is that you won't find garter snakes in Britain, but a possible alternative would be the adder: they're venomous, but that wouldn't present a problem for Tom, and they grow to no more than 60cm, so could potentially be hidden in a smallish box.
