“Yes, I am,” said Julia, as she shook her hand briefly, and then hoped she hadn’t sounded too proprietorial.
Oh, they've come a long way!

He recognised that as one of those questions to which there was no good answer
Ain't it the truth! Wise man.

Very cinematic it's getting to be with all the shadowy cloak and dagger! Casting? Julianne Moore would be pretty great as Marie, I think. Ralph Fiennes as Edward? Jenna-Louise Coleman for Julia, or would she be just too young?

Oh, they've come a long way!

Heh, oh not so much - I've been writing some more early stuff, and Julia has always had a bit of a hidden possessive streak. (It was all that not having anyone, and then having someone. *shrugs*)

And, aw, thanks for reading, and I'm very amused that you have your own fancasting! ♥ (I think Jenna is a bit young - by this point they must be about 43 and 34 respectively? But then, what do film-makers care? ;-p)

Oh dear, Julia meets Marie! Now that is one thing I would be *very* curious about. :D The circumstances were rather difficult-I like the way you handled that whole business about Richard's death, and also Diana with the election in the background. And mostly, all that tension between Edward and Julia-Edward being so infuriatingly collected and cryptic, as adorably obnoxious as Julia was adorably a bit irrational and oversensitive and temperamental, and really, I love those babies. Julia is so sweet and wonderful-wonderfully flawed, human, and endearing. Most of all I love the way you highlighted the whole theme of trust, the shadows of the past and how she wished she could know Edward much better, and really, how most of it came down to being entrusted with things, and feeling he could trust her. Which was so, so much more complicated than they wished ( ... )

Aw, I'm glad you liked it, since you said a while back you'd like to see Marie meet Julia. So, er, there you go! ;-)

Thanks for error-spotting; I've fixed the last. Wide of the mark is a common phrase in English (see here). And Marie is American and being a little wry, so she says "your police...". (But that did make me spot a repeated "after all" in those two sentences, so I fixed that as well. :-D So many errors!)

Yes! I squeed when I realized it was actually happening :D

Thanks for the clarification! Do "of the mark" and "off the mark" both exist, then, or is "off the mark" the incorrect one?

:-)

Wide off the mark would always be incorrect, yes. (On it's own "off the mark" would be fairly legitmate though. English...)

Ah! An excellent piece! I really enjoyed all the back and forth in this--such a complicated relationship (but aren't they all? Though most of them don't involve so much...intrigue so to speak). There were a lot of good one-liners in there too to temper the emotional aspects. I especially liked the whole ashtray bit. ^^
