This stands alone nicely. It didn't throw me that I didn't know who your characters were. It sounds like the boy a decent sort of chap; at least he's willing to listen to the girl he's with. I'm guessing he and Serena are going to be in for a good night (or day?). I look forward to reading more about your characters. Nicely written :)

Not 100% sure what I'm doing with the guy yet- he will definitely play a part- I'm just trying to figure out where/how.
