He says it so fast it’s a blur of words to Ruth and it takes a second before they unravel in her head.

I really like this sentence, especially the "unravel in her head." It's really gets across the way the world seems to go strange and fall to pieces when a loss like this hits you, and it's all the more effective for not dwelling and over-describing.

This is heartbreaking, especially the emotional punch when Hannah is trying to reconcile the fact that Esther is dead.

I know. The Kent State Shootings really upset me whenever I read about them: I mean these were just kids protesting against the rotten Vietnam War! I'm glad this piece had the punch I wanted it to have :)
