Lyssa snatched the card that skittered across the floor towards her and stuffed it between the others in her hand. “I seem to recall this game being more fun when it involved alcohol.”
Ski shook her head and slid the next card to Tess. “As I recall, your version of the game generally entails a fair amount of nudity as well.”
Settling back against Rune, Lyssa smirked. “Present company considered," she said. "I think swapping chores is a perfectly good reward.” Rune draped an arm around her, bracing himself againt the couch to study his own cards.
Ski put down the remainder of the deck and picked up her cards. Lyssa reached for the top of the pile. Without so much as a glance, her sister swatted her hand.
Lyssa shot her an angry look as she nursed her stinging fingers. “What was that for?”
“You can wait until I am ready.”
“What’s it matter? You can’t draw until it’s your turn anyway.”
Ski still didn’t look up from the cards she was sorting in her hand. “It is simply not polite.”
“Yeah, and hitting is,” Lyssa muttered. Tess snorted and Rune gave Lyssa’s shoulder a patronizing pat.
After a moment, Ski lowered her hand, laying the fan of cards across her lap, and raised a brow as she looked at Lyssa. She stared back, not moving.
“Go on,” said Farran.
“I have your permission? Wouldn’t want to get hit again,” she said as she slid the top card from the pile. Ski smiled and shook her head.
Lyssa eyed the red four a moment before sliding it between the others in her hand. She dragged a finger across the cards with a frown before pulling and discarding a green seven.
Rune drew the next card and quickly tossed it on top of Lyssa’s. Ilya snatched it up and added it to her collection.
Lyssa put a hand to her mouth to cover a yawn and Rune’s arm tightened around her. She nuzzled her head against his chest and ignored the string of cards drawn and tossed, until it came to Ski’s turn and she scooped up the whole waste pile.
She frowned at her sister. “I suppose you expect me to wait while you sort that mess?”
“You will if you want me to discard.”
Lyssa grunted as the green seven found its way back to the floor and reached for the top of the stack. She placed the blue four she drew alongside the red and tossed out a black two. Not bothering to see what he did with his turn, she put her attention instead to sliding her free hand along his thigh.
“Lyssa.”
“Mmm?” She eyed the pile, which had rapidly grown. Seeing nothing in it of value, she reached for the deck. She frowned at the useless card and tossed it into the pile. Rune snatched it as soon as it hit the floor, and, with his discard, Ilya took half the pile.
Tess and Farran and Ski each drew and added to their hands, tossing cards aside. Play passed again to Lyssa. She glowered at another useless string of cards and pulled one no more appealing from the deck. All that worked in her hand was the pair of fours.
“I think I’d at least have more luck at this if there was alcohol involved,” she said, dropping the card onto the pile.
“I suspect you would stand a better chance if you stopped showing Rune your hand,” said Farran as Rune took the unwanted card for his own.
“I- what?” Her eyes narrowed as she turned on him. “Cheater!”
Rune offered an innocent smile. “Can I help that you’re waving them in my face?”
“You could tell me.”
“And pass on a chance not to clean the bathroom?” He lay down a fan of matching cards and sent a blue four sailing to the discard pile. “No thanks.”
Lyssa shook her head as she pitched her hand and gathered the rest for her deal. “We can go to your room and I’ll show you how we used to play in the dorms. I won’t mind at all if you cheat then.”
