I suspect he wasn't listening when she said "I have commitment issues." Poor Lucas is about to get his heart broken :(

I think that that was a moment when he should have listened very closely. it would have kept him from proposing this early. At least Mara told him, even if he wasn't listening.

I really loved getting into Mara's head for this. My sympathies have lain with Lucas a lot throughout their recent spree of stories but this has equalled it out a lot. Her emotions are well-explained and make sense to me here, even though they don't quite make sense to Lucas yet.

While writing, I realized that I always tackle Lucas and Mara from Lucas' POV and he is really the one who often comes out as the guy who's trying so hard but then he doesn't pick up the signals she tries to send him and I think that that might be one of the reasons it's so complicated. Lucas is not good at picking up subtleties.

Poor Mara, because she isn't ready yet and has made that prefectly clear. Poor Lucas, because he didn't listen to her and is going to get his heart smashed yet again.

Mara is a strong believer in taking things really slow and not labeling what she and Lucas are and Lucas wants that wedding ring and to be able to call her his wife and he didn't get the meaning of "commitment issues". I feel bad for him more than I feel bad for Mara because she can be so mean to him but that proposal was just plain stupid.
