Blackledge VC-11 sat, feet dragging over the astroturf, pale hands curled around the chain of the swing on either side of him. The park was empty aside from himself and his foster carer, who watched the child carefully.
“Are you having fun?” she asked.
He just looked at her helplessly.
He didn’t understand swings.
He didn’t want to let her down, but he didn’t want to lie either. VC-11 couldn’t really lie anyway. He wasn’t sure how.
“I don’t know,” he said after hesitating.
She sighed and ruffled his thick, dark hair.
“Come on,” she said. “Let’s try the slide.”
